Post your response AFTER reading Ishmael Beah's short story.
"'What does education mean to you? What do you think is does for a society, for an individual, what is its purpose?' He smiled to indicate that this would be an interesting discussion."
I hope ours is just as interesting :-) Answer the professor's opening questions in a thoughtful, SPECIFIC, well-developed, polished paragraph. But remember: as in a live discussion, you don't want to repeat what your peers have already said. Make sure to read previous responses and build upon and/or respond to the ones already posted or add a NEW idea/point to the discussion. Be original. Be specific. Mean what you say; say what you mean. Vague and repetitive responses will receive a low grade.
And please, please edit and proofread before you post!
Education to me is a preventative measure. I believe in this because it does not truly stop bad things from happening, but it makes people less likely to partake in them. It also adapts people to remove themselves from bad situations if they are ever put inside of them.
ReplyDeleteEducation to me is being able to have a chance to know how to part take in something bigger then what you originally thought you could do. This is my out look on education because if no one would of gotten a good education we would not be as advanced as we are now. We would not have all the medical treatments, and the technology that we have no if we did not have to learn and get some kind of education. I also think that education is truly a blessing because after the speaker today, knowing how many children all over the world who do not the opportunity to get an education is unbelievable, so it really is a blessing that I get to go to Collegiate and get one of the best educations.
ReplyDeleteLower level, non college education is a taste of what you want to do with your life. That person then goes to college, and eventually studies what they want to do in life. In an ideal world, they then become that profession. That person will have a job. Jobs are what makes the world go round. A society without education will be a society that does not run smoothly. Education does not seem like a big part of society, but without it the world would not function.
ReplyDeleteEducation is not only a hard-earned benefit of our society, but I believe that it comprises our society's very infrastructure. If society is a skyscraper, its foundation is most certainly education; each member is essentially a construction worker who starts from a single point, the foundation, and contributes his share of the project until the building is complete. No matter how one desires to make a difference in the world, they must have an understanding of how the world thinks, operates, and changes to truly make an impact, and this is achieved through education.
ReplyDeleteIn response to what Bethany said, I think that eduction helps our members of society get a job, but I also believe that it helps us make moral, social, and personal decisions. School exercises our mind, and makes us overall more intelligent. Many of the things we learn can be applied to real world situations. Without education, I would most likely be a completely different person than I am today. I believe education informs you, so that you can be individual and learn as much as you can. This way, you can find out what you're passionate about and make a difference in your own way.
ReplyDeleteI believe that everybody had some type of education in them, but nobody realizes how unique and special it is. I believe that education is a gift and that everyone has the ability to receive, but not everybody knows how to open the box. Education is a gift that if people work hard enough to receive a higher education, the outcome will be a bigger and better gift. Education in society has no limit and the gift just keeps on increasing for the amount of work you put in to get that gift
ReplyDeleteWithout education, the world would be boring as boring could be. Everyday we learn about a gazillian new things each day; we just don't always process them as new information. Society needs education to thrive because without something to learn, we wouldn't know how to in the first place. Without something to learn, we wouldn't have anything to do. Without anything to do, we would basically be unable to achieve anything in life. We learn every single moment of our life. Whether its something superficial like I look amazing in that color or something significant that will help you achieve your goal in life, you are always learning. So to me, education is definitely important, and it makes up all of our lives.
ReplyDeleteEducation is something that should be valued and appreciated. Reiterating what Spencer West mentioned earlier in school today,"Be thankful for what you have." I agree with this statement because although we are blessed to go to school, others may not have this opportunity. Why? Simply, education helps any human being conceive ideas, and apply them to their everyday life. It expands their horizon. It helps them learn about the world, and apply their knowledge in an everyday skill. True, it helps people get a job, but it enables them to logically think.
ReplyDeleteEducation is vital for our society. It is what allows us to understand how the world works, and what is going on around the world. It is always a necessity if one wants to make a big difference in the world. Education can also calm a person's curiosity. Personally, learning helps with my imaginative mind. It helps answer the questions, big or small, that I think of often. If not every day, every week I am thinking of possible ways to apply what I learned to possible inventions, future organizations, and/or global changes.
ReplyDeleteI believe that education is very important in our society. What comes to mind first when I think about not having any formal education is illiteracy; I think of the chaos that would cause. However I do believe that even if you don't go to an actual school you will still learn, but different things, like the following: how to take care of the family, or the house, or how to plant the fields. However, in our society if someone is not able to attend a school, it would make their everyday life a lot harder. For instance it would be very very hard to find a job, to pay for the bills, to live in a buliding, etcetera. So yes, I am very thankful for my education and believe that it is very important.
ReplyDeleteEducation is a process that can be useful, efficient and helpful to take advantage of living in the society. It keeps public order and make wealthier future. It also teaches me how to read, write, expand knowledge, learn common sence and get technical skills. I can also learn building relationship between people and help understand each other by using knowledge such as the language, or the culture and history, or the way of thinking. During taking education, I can find what I am good at and what I am interested in. Education is to find myself and know about who I am.
ReplyDeleteWithout education we would not be as advanced in society as we are today. It is very important and helps in everyday life. Education does not always have to taught in school, anyone can be an educator and teach someone something new. I think education is valued greatly these days and appreciated by most. Each person in a society can be a vital importance. Just because someone does not have straight A's does not make them an uneducated person. People learn in different ways and have innovative ways of showing that. Education is much broader than school and can be perceived in numerous ways.
ReplyDeleteEducation makes intelligent people in our society. Our nation is the most educated, because we invest money into the education of our people. Also in our nation everyone has accessibility to education, unlike in some other countries. I think that education can change the world. To me, education is very important, because I truly do want to learn so I can understand more of what is occurring in the world, why and how to change it. For example, why in Kenya, as Spencer West talked about, is there poverty? I think that education helps our minds think better, which in turn, helps us make better decisions, which affects what is happening around the world. I also think that education pulls out the best in me, because I thrive to succeed and do my best, which shows my ability in learning.
ReplyDeleteEducation is not just learning things to learn them. Education is the foundation in which we learn to think. This is arguably the most important thing one could ever acquire: the ability to problem solve and think creatively. What good is knowing how to add 2+2 when you don't know how to find your total bill or mortgage payment for example? Education is something that is meant to be applicable to the rest of our lives, but not necessarily the direct material we learn. For our society, it is essential that we can collectively work together to face challenges as a whole, and education can teach us that.
ReplyDeleteEducation is extremely important to me. It is setting the basis for my future and life. Education can be taken in many different ways other than school. I learn new things everyday and become educated in different things. Education causes me to use my mind in new ways, and gives me new ideas and concepts everyday. Education can change perspectives on many different things, and gives you more knowledge about the world today. Without education, our world wouldn't be able to grow and prosper. Education plays a major role in our world, our lives, and our community.
ReplyDeleteEducation is not just school. Every day, through our life experiences, we are all being educated in some way. Not a day goes by when I don't learn something about life. I think that this education, the kind you get simply by living, is much more important than the type we get in school. It's great that we have all these tests and grades and projects, but the real question is whether or not we can put what we learn in school into action in the real world. It's like being street smart compared to being book smart, and there is a big difference.
ReplyDeleteEducation isn't just going to school to learn random things. Education is something that I will use for the rest of my life. Education lets me decide what I want to do when I grow up. It enriches our lives with knowledge that is irreplaceable. It is the foundation of all life. Education, to me, isn't something I want to do everyday, I will be honest. Even though I don't want to go to school everyday, I shouldn't have to realize how lucky I am after listening to a speaker, watching something on TV, or reading a book. Education is something that should be given to everyone and it should be appreciated. I hope I can value education like the children in Africa do.
ReplyDeleteEducation gives people a sense of structure. Education provides a sense of unity and stability within a learning community. In my opinion, education is the most important value in life. It gives people the opportunity to enrich their mind on a day to day basis, and that is just school. Outside school there are many other things to be taught and learned. As a society we feel a special connection to education because we feel as we educate ourselves we are bettering ourselves as people. And that's pretty powerful.
ReplyDeleteI believe in the power of education. To me, education gives people the opportunity to accomplish their dreams and helps them strive to reach their goals. In school, education is what keeps me motivated. When I am feeling down and want to give up, I have to remind myself of what the bigger picture is. Knowing what you can accomplish with the power of a great education is endless and truly inspirational to me. Education is a progressive discovery and takes nothing less than passion and hard work. Challenging your brain every day is vital, for the world was made to teach, and I intend on learning.
ReplyDeleteEducation is not only learning; education means learning and teaching. We are teaching in many different ways, but anyway we are always learning or teaching. Learning is a process of assimilation and conquer. Learning is gaining wisdom about being, thinking and acting. I do not think that education is only given to us in school, I believe that education comes from all places, our homes, schools, with our friends, and all the people who live around us. Education helps us grow in life, and is there for our benefit and the benefit of all our community.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of education, at least in my mind, is to get the person being educated ready for independent life. Although of the subjects taught in schools and universities are mainly meant to help with future problems one may encounter in his/her field, some courses are purely there to increase logical thinking skills and promote sharpness of mind.
ReplyDeleteIn society education can determine a lot of things about a person. An employer is more likely to choose an applicant that has a college degree over one who doesn't. In short, education determines the rank of the applicants when compared to each other.
I believe in education. It helps everybody learn so much about the world and other key aspects that it is so needed. Education is one of the biggest factors in my life that keeps me going. When I wake up, I always am looking forward to learning something new in school. I find it very interesting to know that everyday I will be able to learn something new. In my mind, education gives people the ability to know what they are going to do later in life. It is always the best feeling when you are learning something new at school and you get tested on it, and then you know you all the material and get a good grade on that subject. Education is a life fluid that keeps the people going throughout the day. To push yourself everyday and learn something new everyday is key to a healthy education. It is my goal to keep doing my best everyday and get the best education I can.
ReplyDeleteI like the reference with life fluid very descriptive.
DeleteEducation is important to every person in the world. With an education we are able to learn about events around the world, literature, mathematics, and so much more. I believe that so many people take school lightly and they don't see how lucky they are. I think that education helps individuals by giving them something to give back to the world. The educated are the ones that can help those that are not as lucky. But it is us who decide what to do with our education to make the world a better place.
ReplyDeleteEducation means learning skills to enrich our lives. The things that we learn in school, whether we know it or not, we use all the time in the real world. It could be using the math skills you learned in geometry for your job as an architect, using the language skills in spanish to help a lost foreign person find his way, or even using proper English.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that education is life. Education is the ability to grow and mature. Education is the ability to try, make a mistake, learn, and then try again. Education is so much more than simply sitting in a classroom lecture. It's experiencing the world, taking risks, getting involved, helping people. Education is the future.
There are many different types of education, and I think they are all important. In school, I learned all the normal subjects of math, science, English, and history, and those are all important. I'll use what I learn not only for tests and quizzes, but also in life. I'll use it to get a good job that I like and for my future, but more basically, I need to learn these things so that I can speak with correct grammar and write and read and be able to manage money. People should all have this basic education, because it's important to be able to communicate and make a living, and I'm glad that I got the opportunity to learn all of this. But what I also learned in school besides the concrete things was how to use my mind and problem-solve. I think this skill is the most important because everyone will face problems every day that they will need to be able to solve, so the ability to use your mind and think on your own is extremely valuable.
ReplyDeleteEducation is opportunity. Everyone receives some sort of education in their life time, and when they do, new doors are opened for there lives. Everyone has different levels of education, and because our society believes your education determines your future, people with more education have more opportunities. With opportunity, people can change society and the world. Education works on the other side too; people need education to take advantage of their opportunities. Without education people are clueless. Without education the world would never evolve. Education makes the world go round; it is human nature to use our education and to educate other people. Education completes the circle of life.
ReplyDeleteEducation is both a gift and an encumbrance. For those who are fortunate to have access to education (and take advantage of it as well), they are expanding their knowledge vastly. They begin to learn and grow as a human being and begin to think for themselves.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, education develops a hierarchy and inflates competition. In society, it is now believed that those who excel are at the top, and those who A. cannot receive an education or B. choose not to receive one are at the bottom. Students battle to excel the most, and facilities attempt to prove they offer the best education. We now believe that everything boils down to "survival of the fittest". Education has been twisted from a gift of knowledge into a necessity that one cannot survive without.
Education is a gift, and anyone who receives it should be honored. It helps a community be more understanding of one another and shows more insight into different communities and how we could be like them in a way. Its purpose is to enlighten. Not just in math and science but education can also be in social skills and simple life tasks.
ReplyDeleteGoing to a school like Collegiate is a privilege. I think eduacation should be a right. It's sad to think that not only in Africa do children not recieve an education, but all over the world. Students even in Louisville don't recieve a good eduaction, because they don't realize how much of a privilege it is to live in a country were eduaction is a right. I think in order to recieve a good education there have to be teachers that are willing push students to their fullest potential. Students should also push themseleves to they can get the most out of their education.
ReplyDeleteEducation provides us with an opportunity to change the world. Without education we would not have some of the important things we have today. No cars, no electricity, no airplanes. Thanks to education our world has changed greatly, and without it we would be stuck in the past. If we had no education, we would not move forward and not be in the same position as a country. To me education is a gift. Not everyone in the world is blessed with the opportunity to even go to school, much less a school like Collegiate. I go to a school where the teachers are here for me to learn and to help me change the world. Thanks to education, I have a chance to be somebody. I chance to make an impact on this world.
ReplyDeleteEducation is any form of learning. It is when a person is given facts and interprets them into knowledge. People are educated on a daily basis whether they realize it or not. Education gives people opportunities and goals to achieve. It gives people a purpose in life. With education people can realize their full potential and are able to become successful. I believe everybody needs education. To me there is no bad education. It just depends on what a person does with their knowledge, and what they are educated on. Education is for anyone who is willing to learn.
ReplyDeleteEducation, is the process of learning, in which someone expands their knowledge. Education can come in all kinds of ways, a person can learn. An education, gives you open doors, and options in life. If you get a good education, and actually apply what you learn, you can be a successful person. Without an education, their wouldn't be any advancements in society, culture, and technologies. Education shapes the way we live.
ReplyDeleteEducation gives one knowledge to move forward in the world. Education expands one's mind to understand one another better within a society. For the individual it help one's discover and invent many great idea's, and helps prosper a new way of looking at things. Education gives one the confidence to not only be book smart, but also street smart. You dont always have to have the brains to be considered smart, but also to have sensability with one's knowledge.
ReplyDeleteTwo individuals standing in a house - one a chef, the other a carpenter - they see the house very differently. The chef's attention is drawn to the kitchen, and she will see ingredients, working space, and equipment. The carpenter will see structure and construction of the house in its entirety. They look at the same house differently because they have had different educations. Humans are innate learners. We all look at life differently because of education. Education does not have to be in the classroom. Every second of every day we learn. Part of education is who taught you and what you learned yourself.
ReplyDeleteKate I love your response! The example that you use in the beginning is perfect and is a simple way to get your point across!
Deletenice!
DeleteEducation means to me as to learn new things that you didn't know before and understand them in a better way. I think that education does for the society is it helps make somethings grow and expand further on. For an individual it helps you with finding a job that you like and would want to stay with in the future. The purpose of education is that it helps people understand things more. Also education helps you go to the top on where you want to go on in your life. Education helps lead your life when you start college and on in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that education, which would include learning about anything from a school situation or from other people outside of school, is the foundation for exploring new topics and things that someone may not have noticed in the past, or just a way to prepare for the future by learning certain values about life that may encourage better knowledge or decisions in the years to come. But education is also a very important privilege because of the new opportunities that it can bring to light, and how it is very difficult to learn for those who are in poverty or less privileged than others.
ReplyDeleteEducation is opportunity, an essential, and knowledge. Education lets people of any race or nationality get good jobs. Education is essential because it helps people think critically: when voting, when purchasing items, and during everyday life. Through education, a person will learn a variety of information. Education will help me get into a good college, find a good job, and make smart decisions regarding my family. Education will not help someone if they are not willing to learn and understand and extrapolate new information.
ReplyDeleteEducation is what puts meaning behind every word and every action we commit. Without education, humans are bound to repeat the same mistakes over and over; why wouldn't we? It's ingrained in our nature. Education is a privilege. Those who don't have it want it while we sit and complain about having to go to school. It's not really our fault, though. In America, we are schooled and sometimes educated. I feel education is learning for the sake of learning and wanting to know about the world around you but in this country, we are "educated" to get a good job, to get money, to be able to afford to send our kids to a good school, so they can get a good education...the cycle goes on and on. Education creates great minds; we are creating broken minds.
ReplyDeleteEducation is what shapes our society into what it is today. In our North American culture, we are used to every one going to school. But we also dread that trip to school and the long day that follows it when we should actually be greatful. We are offered knowledge and that is the greatest gift that can be given. Education is what sets us up for the rest of our lives and instead of dreading going to school everyday, we should embrace it. Because we are given one of the most beautiful gifts that this world can offer. So if we don't embrace it and are thankful for it, then we aren't motivated to learn, then there is no point to it.It shapes you in to who you are as an individual and affects you for the rest of your life.
ReplyDeleteEducation is what prepares you for the rest of your life. We are blessed to live in a country that allows us to go to school everyday, and to be so close to a public education. Despite how blessed we are, I do not feel as if we are completely ready for the rest of our lives. About once a week, my parents will ask me what I did in school, I answer with an honest answer covering the topics. After I am done,I am returned with a blank stare from my mom and a nod from my dad. Following, i am asked if I have learned to cook, pay with a credit card, fill out a check book? I answer with no, and they tell me about their life skills, and home management classes. Apart of me wishes I had those classes instead of pre-cal or Spanish. Even though the schools try, were not ready for the real world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what your are saying, but I also think that if school was totally for learning, life skills the world would be so structured. I think school should teach us more about things that we are going to have to be able to do in real life, but I also think that school should be more about making the students passionate about something. School is preparing us for life because it is giving us something to live for.
DeleteEducation is the foundation for your career and your retirement. If you don't get a good foundation, then you can't get a good job, and If you don't get a good job, then you can't retire easily. Education is not only for yourself, It is for future generations who need desperately the best information. Just like the game telephone, ideas can sometimes get mixed up, or confused. With a strong education, it also gives the future generations the same thing you have.
ReplyDeleteEducation is the most important thing in life because it helps you with everything you do. I you don't have a good education, then you will not understand many things about the world, or be a functioning member of society.Another important thing is to teach the new generations. This is important because if we don't teach them, then everything that has happened in the past will have been a waste.
ReplyDeleteEducation is what gives you a guide for the rest of your life. You never stop getting educated and get more and more educated as life goes on. It helps society advance more and more. Education helps you in getting a job and having a good life with the career path you choose. It helps you be successful in whatever you want to do in your life. Education is very imported. It alows you to make eduacted decisions. Such as with history so that the farher generations dont make same mistakes.
ReplyDeleteEducation is suffering through bullies, and teachers saying you are nothing, yet rising through it. It is the devolpment of knowledge of expeirences, and of scholastcics which we will use in adulthood for the betterment of society. I believe education was meant to hurt, and through you know what is bad and what is good. The experience of gaining knowledge is one that will never cease. I will always learn something everyday.
ReplyDeleteEducation is what allows society to function. With education we can learn from past mistakes, and help prevent stuff from happening in the future. Education makes people more aware of the problems facing our world today. Education is a gift that many here in America are lucky to have with it we can go very far in life.
ReplyDeleteEducation is a competition. It is survival of the smartest. Colleges and businesses do not look for kids in the middle of their class. They look for kids who surpass the challenges the teachers oppose upon you, and you win. Education makes children into youth and youth into men. Education is life.
ReplyDeleteEducation is a right. Everyone deserves to learn educationist the core of the rest of your life. Your job and status in the future
ReplyDeleteEducation is what will determine the rest of your life. With out education, not only will you not be able to get a job, but fuctioning and problem solving in everyday life would be difficult.
ReplyDeleteTo me, education is what you go to school for. It is learning academic topics. I think that education has many levels. You could be able to read a picture book or write a 50-page essay. If a society is educated, then they are able to know more about their lives and their surroundings. They could possibly do things better than a society that was not as well educated, but would have to deal with bigger problems.
ReplyDeleteEducation is the door to our futures. With an education, you can have your fullest potential to move forward and do something big. Going to school helps us learn the basic subjects in life and without these basic understandings we wouldn't be able to see the bigger picture. If we can't see the bigger picture, there is no way we would be able to accomplish our goals. Like Jake K. said, going to school allows us to get a job. Once we get a job we can afford a family, then we can support or family, and then eventually retire. Getting an education is something that not everyone is lucky enough to have, but if we learn why people aren't able to afford an education then we could potentially help them. We have to learn how to use the knowledge we have to make the world a better place for everyone and not just ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that education is different for everybody. In the United States, it is important that we get an education, but our education will usually help with our jobs and futures. There are other areas of the world where their education is different, like learning how to stay alive by hunting, farming, or like in Ishmael Beah's case, fighting to stay alive. As a society, it helps us make educated decisions about our countries future, and as an individual, it helps us learn how to put information we have learned to work in the world.
ReplyDeleteto me, education is future. It allows us to learn skills that will help us achieve great things in life. I am blessed with education because of this great country. Without education, we would all be cave men obsessed with rocks not knowing what to do. Education is everything in live because without it, we would not have technology, and without that, life would be very short due to lack of medicine.
ReplyDeleteEducation is a key to opening doors. With education you learn something new every day. With the things we learn every day, we can achieve many things. Without education our great nation would be the same. The United States and the world would not be the same. How long you live would be shorten because of the lack of medicine and the lack of skill. We would not have a iphone 5 or the technology that we have now.
ReplyDeleteTo me, education is a gift that anyone can recieve and keep forver. Education is one of the few things that someone cannot take from you. I am honored to be at a great school like Collegiate, and I try by very best to succeed here; however, others do not take advantage of all the oppurtunities given to them here that other people I know would kill for. Although, I do think that a top notch education is not for eveyone. There are people in this world who do not have a fantastic education career, yet they have made their own impact on the world. For example, George Bernard Shaw dropped out of high school, but he became one of the best playwrights known to actors. It is true that education sparks new ideas and inovations, but it takes those with creative minds to take the education they have and come up with those new invocations.

ReplyDeleteTo me education is a right. Everyone no matter how poor, rich or intelligent deserves education. Education is the base of what you will be in the future. Even if you want to own a McDonalds, education is still important.
Education is not always from books, schools and teachers. Education doesn't have to be something material. Education can be something that is passed down from your family or even a simple comment from a peer.
